MY AMATEUR DAYS

By

ROGER HUNT

LIVERPOOL and ENGLAND

Ever since my National Service days in the Army I have remembered with pleasure the games I had as an amateur with Devizes Town. In fact I can truthfully say that these comparatively relaxed and free and easy games then were just as enjoyable as those I play in carrying so much tension today.

While with Devizes I was thrilled to be picked for an FA Amateur XI which played London University at Motspur Park. I had a very quiet game, and the side as a whole didn't excel. We were beaten 0-1, the winner being a wonderful effort by Hugh Lindsay who has since had such a sparkling amateur career.

Soon after this I was demobbed, and signed professional forms for Liverpool. As I had previously been turned down by Bury I was particularly pleased to be accepted, and have been amazed how the luck has gone with me ever since. However I will always remember with pleasure the happy months I spent as an amateur in the South and especially the spirit that existed in Devizes.
